How to Build a Home Gym for $1,000
A thousand dollars buys you a serious home gym — power rack, barbell, weight plates, bench, and flooring. Here's exactly what to buy, what to skip, and what each piece costs at current prices.
The $1,000 Home Gym Breakdown
| Item | Recommendation | Est. Price |
|---|---|---|
| Power Rack | Titan T-3 Series | $450 |
| Barbell | REP Colorado Bar or CAP Beast | $150 |
| Weight Plates | 260 lbs iron plates (Craigslist/FB) | $160 |
| Bench | REP FB-5000 flat bench | $150 |
| Flooring | 2x 4'x6' horse stall mats | $90 |
| Total | $1,000 |
Where to Save vs Where to Spend
Save on plates. Used iron plates are the single best value in home gym equipment. Check Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist — you'll find iron for $0.50/lb. A 260 lb set costs $130–$160 used versus $400+ new. Weight is weight.
Spend on the rack. The Titan T-3 at $450 is the best sub-$500 rack. 2x3" 11-gauge steel, Westside spacing, compatible with hundreds of attachments. Don't cheap out on the thing that catches your failed reps.
Flooring is non-negotiable. Two 4'x6'x3/4" stall mats from Tractor Supply cost $90 and protect your concrete from deadlifts. Skip this and you'll regret it the first time you set down 300 lbs.
